Kindle Skins

On its own, the Kindle is not the prettiest gadget in the world, but the good news is, there are tons of Kindle Skins available in a wide variety of colors and designs.

If you are not familiar with what a skin is, it is a lot like a decal you can stick on the wall. For readers who want protection, covers might much more useful.  Skins are mostly used to make Kindles look fun and more exciting.

The skins are designed to fit the latest generation Kindle. The Van Gogh and Monet skins are really cool. Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings. So, when I upgrade my Kindle, I am thinking about getting that one.

DecalGirl’s Kindle skins include famous paintings, flowers, butterflies, and other nature themed artwork. The skins are designed with an anti glare, satin finish. So, unlike cases, they don’t add any bulk to the e-reader.

Several reviewers recommended getting a protective screen cover in addition to the skin to prevent scratches on the screen. I think screen protectors are necessary for all of the new electronic devices: tablets, e-readers, smartphones, etc, because they are constantly on the go.

If you are in the mood for something more subtle that fits into the look and feel of the Kindle, GelaSkins has a number of interesting designs to choose from. I think the Sudoku Kindle Skin is pretty cool, and has more earthy tones. You’ll find a bunch of black and grey ones that match the e-reader itself.

Both DecalGirl and GelaSkins skins include adhesive stickers that are easy to apply. The prices are not too bad, at around $20, but could be better depending on what you are wanting the skins to do for you. I did notice that for most of the GelaSkin selection, they are in limited supply and many are used.

Twilight fans, you would probably enjoy the SkinIt Team Edward Kindle Skin.

This review of the Starry Night skin gives a good summary of what Kindle Skins can do for you.

“This item should not be confused as a case or shell, it is merely a decal sticker to dress up your kindle. I love this painting and it looks great, it will protect it from scratches too! We have multiple Kindles in our household and this is a great way to distinguish between them and show some individuality.”
